Many people from both in and out of Vermont question how we Vermonters continue to elect a right-wing Republican like Jim Douglas to our highest office. This question is difficult to answer, but the “nice-guy” image is just that — image. Those of us who pay attention to politics know that Douglas has been a major booster for George W. Bush, a man who would not even set foot in our entire state in his eight years of mismanaging the government. I think his tax cuts — that have mostly benefited the wealthiest citizens — were wrong to start with, and it’s even more wrong now to extend them for another decade. Even by the normal standards of Gov. James Douglas, we are appalled by the brazen cynicism of the economic stimulus package he unveiled on Saturday. Take a bunch of old ideas that have gone nowhere in the Legislature. Borrow a little money. Offer a couple of token tax breaks and credits. Dress it up with some flowery rhetoric and give it a catchy name - the “Road Map to Prosperity.” Voila! You have another Douglas plan that’s long on politics and short on substance. (more…)
