Pollina is hero Vermont needs

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

The dream of our state being saved by Democrats turned into a nightmare with Gaye Symington as speaker for their majority. Bill Cleary needs to wake up, but he can’t expect Gaye to be a hero, not with her record (”Pollina, be a hero and drop out of race,” July 1). The worst blow to environmental protection and Abenaki rights was delivered when she orchestrated the legislative boondoggle allowing continuing degradation of the sensitive archaeological Intervale site. State cuts will hurt Vermonters

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

The Douglas Administration’s recent decision to leave critical state jobs vacant will ultimately hurt Vermont women who already cannot afford health insurance. The governor’s decision to leave vacant yet another Health Outreach Specialist position means that fewer people will be monitoring and referring lower income women for routine mammograms and cervical cancer screening. Studies have repeatedly shown the old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is true. (more…)

State is missing opportunities

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

Douglas Republicans, in collaboration with some Democratic legislative leaders, are holding Vermont back.

Failure to advance wind power leaves us behind our neighbors. Business interests are providing expensive solar add-ons to homes of the wealthy, but modest solar envelope homes could be a sensible state development effort. (more…)

Trusting Shay

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

Kudos to Shay Totten for setting the record straight on the nonexistent “rift” between Progressive gubernatorial candidate Anthony Pollina and Vermont’s organic farming advocates [“Fair Game,” July 2]. (more…)

Pollina can move Vermont forward

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

Vermonters have a long history of direct involvement in the political process. Therefore, I am shocked at the recent animosity coming from the political establishment about Anthony Pollina’s candidacy for governor. Everyday Vermonters are becoming more and more disgusted with politics, but somehow commentaries still advocate “politics as usual.”

Promoting the local economy

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

I recently found a cheery harvest guide from the Vermont Department of Agriculture tucked into a local newspaper. And while I’m more than willing to see my tax dollars being used to promote Vermont farm products, I was dismayed to see that the publication was not only being used to promote governor-scissors-hand, but was doing it in a way that misrepresents reality. My Turn: Jim does not equal jobs

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Now, the unemployment rate is the highest in 14 years (”State jobless rate highest in 14 years,” June 21) and that is without including IBM’s most recent cuts. It would be disingenuous to suggest that this was all the governor’s fault. Yet, by the governor’s own measurement, not only is he falling short, the record during his tenure is really quite a failure. (more…)

Questions for Douglas after 6 years in office

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

When running against Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan asked, “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?” Now, loyal Republican Gov. James Douglas after six years in office wants yet another term: So it’s appropriate to ask Vermonters: Are you better off now than you were six years ago? (more…)

Time to stop giving Governor Douglas credit he doesn’t deserve

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

With Gov. Douglas’ recent campaign stop in Windham County, it’s a reminder to take note of the Douglas spin machine.

Most recently, the governor announced last week, he would “release an additional $1 million into the traditional weatherization program.” The reality check on this is the governor trying to take credit for something he was originally against. This is a pattern those of us in the Legislature have gotten to know all too well, and we hope others are also catching on to this. (more…)

Pollina better on health care

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

I was relieved to hear that Anthony Pollina is going to remain in the race for governor. Health care continues to be the issue of overwhelming importance, and Pollina recognizes that. (more…)
