State cuts will hurt Vermonters

Letter to the Editor:

The Douglas Administration’s recent decision to leave critical state jobs vacant will ultimately hurt Vermont women who already cannot afford health insurance. The governor’s decision to leave vacant yet another Health Outreach Specialist position means that fewer people will be monitoring and referring lower income women for routine mammograms and cervical cancer screening. Studies have repeatedly shown the old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is true.Early detection not only saves lives, it saves money — by treating chronic conditions before they require critical health care intervention. The elimination of state positions may sound like a money saver, but in the long run, it will cost Vermonters more.
