Pollina Statement on Douglas Veto of Yankee Decommissioning Bill
Wednesday May 7, 2008 Press Statement:
“By vetoing the Vermont Yankee Decommissioning bill, Governor Douglas is abandoning Vermont consumers in favor of an out-of-state nuclear power corporation.
The Governor is throwing any pretense of an ‘affordability agenda’ out the window with this decision. His veto will cost Vermonters a lot of money for years to come, well after he leaves office. He is ducking responsibility. His claim that he is saving ratepayers money is wrong. He is letting Entergy off the hook and leaving Vermont ratepayers holding the bag.
Vermonters will have to wonder why the Governor is again siding with big business and special interests over the interests of Vermonters and letting this powerful corporation get away with whatever scheme they want.
The legislature simply wanted to make sure that Entergy sets aside the money they need to shut down the plant, take it apart, and take care of the deadly toxic waste they will leave behind. It is the least a corporate citizen can do.
Douglas is totally out of touch with Vermonters on this.”
