Anthony Pollina offers a real choice for Vermont
Letter to the Editor:
Many people from both in and out of Vermont question how we Vermonters continue to elect a right-wing Republican like Jim Douglas to our highest office. This question is difficult to answer, but the “nice-guy” image is just that — image. Those of us who pay attention to politics know that Douglas has been a major booster for George W. Bush, a man who would not even set foot in our entire state in his eight years of mismanaging the government. He now thinks that John (bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran) McCain would be a great successor to Bush.
Douglas’s few new ideas have bombed big time. Selling the state lottery to private investors, garnering 4 percent support from those who filled out the town meeting survey. He also wanted to tax those businesses who are generous enough to provide employee health care to pay for those who are unwilling or unable to contribute.
When we elect our next governor, we need to remember that our state, as well as all states and cities could be spending the money that has been squandered in Iraq and on the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, few of whom live in our state. Money is tight because Douglas’ crony Bush has mismanaged the economy dreadfully. Do we really want to continue in this direction?
Anthony Pollina offers a real choice for Vermont. He is a positive, upbeat, hardworking person who listens to people’s ideas. Anthony is already on the stump trying to defeat Jim Douglas and his negative attitude about what our state can do in the future. We need a governor who can inspire us, who can challenge the thinking that because the economy is in a slump, we can do nothing for ourselves by working together.
We need to get together to defeat Douglas. The stakes are too high right now to continue business as usual in Montpelier or in Washington, D.C.
