$1 for Pollina

Pollina for affordable and fair Vermont

Letter to the Editor:

Another tax day has come and gone, the eighth one under President Bush. I think his tax cuts — that have mostly benefited the wealthiest citizens — were wrong to start with, and it’s even more wrong now to extend them for another decade. But that’s exactly what John McCain (Republican) promises to do if he’s our next president.

These tax cuts are financed by running up a huge national debt, which must be paid off someday. The only way to do that will be to raise taxes or cut public services that we all depend on, from health care, education, and transportation to developing clean energy and protecting the environment.

Gov. Douglas has been a big Bush supporter, even if he disagrees on a few things occasionally. And now he’s backing McCain. But we need a governor who will strongly oppose McCain’s (if he’s elected) policy of extending the Bush tax cuts and the war in Iraq, into which McCain also wants to sink even more hundreds of billions of our tax dollars.

And if Obama or Clinton is our next president, we’ll need a governor who will also push them to roll back these Bush tax cuts, so that our federal tax dollars can be used to meet our state and nation’s urgent needs.

That’s why I support Anthony Pollina for our next governor. His track record, his views, and his values demonstrate how strongly he’ll work for a truly fair and affordable Vermont for everyone, not just those at the high end of the economic ladder.
